The
McLeod's settled in Field Creek Texas in 1875-76. John McLeod and Catherine
lived in Field Creek all their lives in Mason, San Saba, and Llano Counties as
Mason, San Saba and Llano Counties come together there. Many had land in all 3
counties. Aunt Merle, her husband, young John (Babe) McLeod, my Grt, Grt,
Grandfather, John, his son William McLeod (my grandfathers father) are
buried in the Pontotoc Cemetery in Pontotoc, Texas. They were all pioneers of
that region (1870's). The buildings there in Pontotoc were built from the
stones that were carved from a rock quarry which was on my grt grt granpa Bill
Holloway's place in Pontotoc. John McLeod 1st job was as a 'Farrier',later on
he opened a 'General Store' with a man by the name of Appleton there in Field
Creek owhich is just a mile or si from Pontottoc. They sold much goods in the
Territory. I believe Grt,Grt, Grandpa John McLeod,Aunt Merle's Father -in-law
(she was married to John McLeod's son, John) his namesake, however,I think
everyone called him 'Babe',,as he was the youngest,I think? (so as not to
confuse the two!) His Father, John Mcleod, also ran a Cotton Gin there, in
Pontotoc.
Here's
some recent Information I just recently discovered on Our
Ancestor,Grt,Grt,Grandpa, John Mcleod- today!-John McLeod was wounded at
Gettysburg'..a gunshot wound to the leg. He
was captured on July 1st,1963. and sent to a Hospital a David's Island at
New York Harbor.,where he was treated and released on July 17.1863. If you
remember,in Aunt Merle McLeod's letter,she describes,that apparently,John
Mcleod, suffered a wound to his leg,in the Civil War, and retained a limp the
rest of his life...What is interesting is,I found this out today, and today is
the 144 Aniversary of the 'Battle Gettysburg'!!. The 3ed Alabama Infantry
was involved on the First day as they advanced on the Union Flank from the
North out of Carlisle Pennsylvania !
He
and his Brother William served with the 3rd Alabama Infantry. Grt,grt,Grandpa
John McLeod's Sister,Margaret was married to an Attorney ,James Campbell
Hunphries. He was appointed to th Supteme Court by President Grant in 1870. He
served from 1870 to 1879. Margart McLeod Humpries and James Campbell Humphties,
would be Young John McLeod's [Aunt Merle's Husband] Aunt and Uncle.
