SNYDER DAILY NEWS http://www.snyderdailynews.com/Stories/index.htm Roy Burgess 1912-2000 Roy Shands Burgess, a registered pharmacist for 54 years, died Thursday, Sept. 28, in a Georgetown hospital following a lengthy illness. Graveside service for Mr. Burgess, 88, is set for 4 p.m. Saturday in Hillside Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Miller Robinson, longtime friend and retired minister of Colonial Hill Baptist Church, will officiate. Born May 27, 1912 in Eufaula, Okla., he married Janella Hollis on Nov. 17, 1934 in Quitaque. Mr. Burgess lived in Texas most of his life and was the son of pharmacist E.E. Burgess who worked in Big Spring before opening a store in Quitaque in 1919. Mr. Burgess attended West Texas Teachers College, now West Texas A&M in Canyon. He later attended Danforth School of Pharmacy. He became a licensed pharmacist in 1934 and was honored with a 50-year award by the State Board of Pharmacy. Mr. Burgess worked as a pharmacist in Quitaque, Amarillo, Lubbock and Crowell. He and his brother, Rayburn, had intended to open a new store in Lubbock, but a deal with a buildingcontractor fell through. Acting on the advice of a salesman, the Burgess brothers investigated Snyder and established Burgess Pharmacy on Jan. 1, 1957 at the site of the present Eddie�s Pharmacy. In 1962, Burgess Pharmacy opened a new store on College Ave. Mr. Burgess first retired in 1978 when he sold his interest in the pharmacy to the late Jerry McWilliams and the store changed its name to Burgess-McWilliams Pharmacy. Mr. Burgess continued working as a relief pharmacist in area towns until fully retiring in 1988. He was an active member of the Lions Club. Mr. and Mrs. Burgess, longtime members of the Colonial Hill Baptist Church, moved to Leander in 1998 to be near a daughter. Survivors include his wife, Janella Burgess of Georgetown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Ann and Phil Floyd of Lexington, Okla., and Lou Nell and Harvey Smith of Leander; a brother and sister-in-law, Rayburn and Lyndal Burgess of Odessa; five grandchildren, David, Neill, and Alison Stegall of Austin, Chris Floyd of Davis, Calif., Danny Floyd of Princeton, N.J.; five nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer Association, the local Hospice, the Nature Conservancy or a favorite charity.
