SNYDER DAILY NEWS http://www.snyderdailynews.com/Stories/index.htm Agnes Sorrells 1897-2000 Agnes Sorrells, whose life touched three centuries, died Thursday, Oct. 19, at her Scurry County home southwest of Knapp. Funeral service for Mrs. Sorrells, 103, is set for 2 p.m. Sunday in the First United Methodist Church in Snyder. The Rev. James Merrell, retired Methodist minister, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Ira Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home. Born July 19, 1897 in Lockhart, her parents, Hermann and Emilie von Roeder, moved to Scurry County when she was 12 years old. She walked three and half miles daily to attend the Bison school. Her father was a Civil War veteran and Mrs. Sorrells, at age 97, completed a book, �The Things I Remember About My Papa.� Mr. von Roeder was a stock farmer and also owned a grocery store and served as postmaster in Knapp. She married J.E. �Jim� Sorrells on Jan. 1, 1922 in Knapp. He died on April 19, 1983. They lived all 61 years of their married life at Knapp except for one year in Borden County. In a 1996 interview, Mrs. Sorrells described herself as a �silly young girl who rode horseback, played tennis and danced every chance I had.� At 102, Weldon Key took her for her first flight in a private plane. She attributed her longevity to �avoiding idleness.� In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Sorrells was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille and J.M. Sterling of Vincent and Ellen and Winfred Tucker of Meadow; eight grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. Family visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Mickey Sterling, Howard Sterling, Max von Roeder, Brent Murphy, Ray Sorrells and Elza Grant.
